Talk about it The Frontier Village Association and the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation will need to reach a compromise on the funding for the Frontier Village manager’s position. The Jamestown City Council declined to step into the issue during a special meeting Wednesday. “On May 7 the Frontier Village Association asked us to take action on a funding request denied by Buffalo City Tourism Foundation,” said Mayor Katie Andersen. “Because of the timing of the issue we decided to hold a special meeting.” BCTF had denied funding for the manager’s position during an April 20 meeting. Funding was provided for other staff positions including greeters and maintenance workers. BCTF listed 19 items from 2011 where the Frontier Village Association was out of compliance. This list included overspending on some grants, failure to maintain audience counts at events and not reporting bills or receipts within 45 days. FVA took its request for funding to the City Council during its regular meeting on May 7. The council requested an attorney’s opinion on its authority in the matter which was delivered at the special meeting. “Running tourism is a city function,” said Ken Dalsted, city attorney. “The city has chosen to use Buffalo [...]

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, May 16, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) – Over the past three days, Skills/Competences Canada hosted approximately 500 youth from across the country as they competed in over 40 different trade and technology competitions. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Skills Canada National Competition, Dr. Kellie Leitch, Parliamentary Secretary to Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, congratulated the competitors and announced a recent federal investment in Skills/Competences Canada. “Our government’s top priority is job creation and economic growth, and we recognize that, as the future workforce, young Canadians have much to contribute to our country’s long-term prosperity,” said Dr. Leitch. “Through our grants, tax credits and support for training programs and skills competitions, we are encouraging apprenticeships and careers in the skilled trades.” The Government of Canada announced today that Skills/Competences Canada is receiving over $8 million over three years (2012-2015) in funding to promote careers in the skilled trades and technology and to provide hands-on experience to young Canadians. This investment complements other initiatives, such as apprenticeship grants that provide up to $4,000 to help apprentices complete their training and launch rewarding careers.
OTTAWA — Thousands of academics teaching students about Canada all around the world have been cut loose and left to fend for themselves following the federal government’s decision to slash millions of dollars in funding for their work. An official in the Foreign Affairs Department said in a statement Wednesday that the decision to phase out support for international Canadian studies was made “to focus our programming on the department’s core mandate first.” But those affected are now warning that Canada stands to lose a great deal of international influence, profile and allies as many of these Canadian studies professors and faculty won’t be able to continue without the government’s support. “This is a government that’s saying it wants to promote Canadian interests abroad, promote trade and investment,” said Patrick James, president of the International Council for Canadian Studies, which counts academics from dozens of countries as members. “Our ability to get true, accurate information about Canada out to the public around the world is gone.” Foreign Affairs had in the past offered a range of grants to academics and educational institutions around the world to support research, hold conferences or update courses on Canada. It also presented a range [...]

Denver, CO – May 15, 2012 – The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has recently been taking phone calls from consumers who are suspicious of calls they’ve received about qualifying for a government grant. This has become a popular means of defrauding people as many are not familiar with government grants and are not sure if they might qualify for one. “Grants are not easy to come by and there is always an in-depth process that applicants must go through before they are awarded anything. So, if you didn’t apply for a grant and you receive one of these calls, someone is trying to scam you,” warns Dale Mingilton, president and CEO of the BBB Serving Denver/Boulder. One recent call to the BBB was from a man who said he was contacted by phone and told he qualified for a $7,000 government grant. But the caller told him he had to wire a fee via Western Union before he could receive the grant money. In other instances, scammers ask their targets for account numbers over the phone in order to pay the required “processing fees.” These scammers are not affiliated with the government or any reputable organizations. They are criminals who [...]

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. • Madison County government would lose $3 million, St. Clair County would lose $2.3 million and Granite City schools would lose a whopping $7 million this year under a proposal to divert state tax revenue away from local governments to help pay for teacher pensions statewide. The proposal, by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, would divert some $1.4 billion statewide that comes from a special 2.5 percent state tax on corporations. That money currently goes to myriad local bodies, from county governments, cities and school districts to park districts, fire protection districts and townships. Under legislative amendments filed by Madigan, that money would instead be used to help cover the state’s obligation to teacher pension funding statewide. The measure appears to be intended to make a point. Madigan maintains that the state’s obligation to teacher pensions isn’t sustainable, and that other ways need to be found to fund them. Implicitly threatening to cut off such a huge revenue stream to local governments could ultimately press legislators to start talking about other solutions. “It’s one approach you could take,” said Madigan spokesman Steve Brown. “It’s an argument that might draw others into the discussion. “We’re open to compromise,” he [...]

A trio of vacant houses will be rehabilitated by the city with nearly a half million dollars from a state grant. The Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development announced Tuesday that $475,000 is being awarded to the city through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The funds can be used by municipalities, for-profits and nonprofit developers to purchase abandoned, vacant or foreclosed properties at a discount and then rehabilitate or redevelop them in order to respond to rising foreclosures and falling home values. Fall River’s allocation will be used to acquire and rehabilitate 14 units at vacant properties at 422 Alden St., 57-59 St. Joseph’s St. and 196 Quequechan St. The projects are part of the city’s Neighborhood Building Blocks program, which Mayor Will Flanagan started last fall. The program uses neighborhood associations to help identify problems in their respective areas in order to direct resources where they are most needed. “The Neighborhood Stabilization Program is a key part of the Patrick-Murray administration’s mission of helping our cities and towns redevelop and revitalize abandoned and vacant properties,” Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Greg Bialecki said. “These grants are a great example of what happens when federal and local government and [...]
