GREAT NECK, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Two recipients of NARSAD Grants from the Brain Behavior Research Foundation have provided new insights into the link between childhood stress and the development of mental illness. “Getting us closer to diagnostic tools and establishing early intervention techniques are critically important priorities in mental illness research. These two NARSAD Young Investigator Grantees provide excellent examples of the groundbreaking work we are funding in this area.” NARSAD Young Investigator Grantee Andrea Danese, MD, PhD, found that adults who experience maltreatment as children are twice as likely to develop chronic, long-lasting depression as those without a history of childhood maltreatment. Dr. Danese, an assistant professor at the Department of Child Adolescent Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and his colleagues also found that maltreated individuals are more likely to respond poorly to treatment for depression. His findings were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Dr. Danese states: “Prevention and early therapeutic interventions targeting childhood maltreatment could prove vital in helping prevent the major health burden owing to depression. Knowing that individuals with a history of maltreatment won’t respond as well to treatment may also be valuable for clinicians in determining patients’ prognoses. New insights on the treatment [...]

21 February 2012 The first vans eligible for the government’s new ‘plug-in car van grant’ have been announced, with van buyers able to get 20 per cent (up to £8,000) off the cost of the vehicles. The vans are the Transit Connect Electric from Azure Dynamics, Daimler Mercedes-Benz’s Vito E-Cell, the ECOMILE and JOLLY 2000 from Faam, Mia-electric’s Mia U, Renault’s Kangoo ZE variants, and Smith Electric’s Smith Edison variants SE2 and SE3. “Cars and vans are absolutely central to people’s lives,” said Transport Secretary Justine Greening, “and will remain the only practical and convenient travel choice. Nevertheless, climate change is a global challenge we simply have to meet head on.” She added that the grant also made business sense because it has been estimated that a small electric van will typically cost £100 less in fuel for every thousand miles driven compared to a diesel equivalent. The way that vans are used and driven make them ideally suited to the switch to electric as they often have a predictable route and distance to travel each day; they make frequent stops; and many of them return to an overnight base where they can be easily recharged. The chief executive of [...]

Business owners looking to make exterior improvements to their Oak Park property are eligible for grant money that will help defray some of the costs. Starting Feb. 29, the Oak Park Development Corporation will start accepting applications for improvement grants for the Commercial Property Rehabilitation and Preservation Program. Earlier: Local Entrepreneurs Get Helping Hand Here’s what’s eligible for reimbursement: signs and awnings, restoration of building facades and storefront rehabilitation. Viktor Schrader, OPDC vice president, said the grant program carries a “big emphasis on preservation.” “We always try to pull pictures of the original facade and encourage building owners to include elements of it in order to maintain a historic look,” Schrader said. Grants will be awarded for up to 50 percent of the first $5,000 for an eligible project cost and 25 percent after that. The grants are capped at $25,000 for buildings along Madison Street and $10,000 for all other Oak Park locations. Funding for the Madison Street project comes from the Madison Street Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district, while money for the remainder of potential projects is from the village’s general fund, Schrader said. It’s important to note that only prospective projects will be considered by the program [...]

ATLANTA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Aetna Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Girls Incorporated® of Greater Atlanta (Girls Inc.) for Girls Inc. Sporting Chance®, a program that helps local girls build a foundation for enjoying physical activity, sports and adventure throughout their lives. “For example, after participating in the program, 96 percent of girls reported an interest in joining a recreational sports team and 87 percent were eating less junk food” In 2010 and 2011, through support from the Aetna Foundation, Girls Inc. taught more than 100 girls how to make exercise fun and build healthy eating habits. Girls Inc. Sporting Chance program participants learned a variety of new skills, including how to play basketball and tennis, jump rope, and run track. The girls, ranging from ages 6 to 18, also learned strategies for making smart nutritional choices to keep their bodies healthy, energetic and strong. Many of the girls participating in the program live in areas with significant obesity rates and are at risk of becoming obese or overweight. Sharon Dalton, the Aetna Foundation’s vice president and director of regional grant making, says the Girls Inc. Sporting Chance program offers the kind of dual approach that can effectively fight childhood [...]

I’m Neal Conan in Washington. Conventional wisdom holds we should all put enough away in a rainy day fund to cover expenses for three to six months. That may be a pipe dream for many. So how about a more modest measure: more in emergency savings than we owe on our credit cards. A study just out from bankrate.com reports that almost half of Americans don’t meet that standard, either. Putting away money to pay off that trip to the emergency room or a busted transmission can be tough if you live paycheck to paycheck, and the advice on how to save for those unexpected moments is not exactly straightforward. Or maybe you buy food items in bulk to save money, only to discard uncooked items when they spoil before you have the opportunity to prepare them. Back in 2009, the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure (CARD) Act was signed to great fanfare, with the White House lauding it as a “turning point for American consumers.” The question is, which way have things turned for consumers? By at least one measure, the CARD Act may have been a multi-billion dollar turn in the wrong direction. The CARD Act was implemented on Feb. 22, 2010, and the two-year anniversary of this date marks a fair time to assess the Act’s successes, failures, and overall implications for consumers with credit cards. Counting the costs of the CARD Act Though the CARD Act did not take effect until February 2010, it had been signed by President Obama nine months earlier, and discussed openly for months before that. In the interim, there was a flurry of activity among credit card companies as they adjusted their rates and fees presumably in anticipation of the new law. So, to get a true reading on the impact of this law, it was necessary to go back to late 2008 for a look at how things were before anticipation of the CARD Act started to change things. To do this, CardRatings.com compared terms on [...]

NEW YORK — More people opened new credit card accounts last year, as the banking industry began to loosen standards it tightened during the recession. The number of new cards issued to consumers rose 14 percent in 2011 to about 42.3 million, according to data provided by TransUnion. And about a quarter of those cards – roughly 10.7 million – went to people with less-than-stellar credit histories, TransUnion said. The credit reporting agency said the increased lending to people with lower credit scores doesn’t mean the climate has shifted back to where it was in 2006 and 2007. Lending standards have tightened dramatically since then, said Ezra Becker, vice president of research and consulting in TransUnion’s financial services business unit. But the combination of tight competition for top-rated consumers with improvement in the economy is encouraging banks to take a closer look at lending to consumers who made a few mistakes in the past. This is the second straight quarter that subprime consumers are getting a larger slice of the credit pie than they did during the depth of the Great Recession.
